Job Title: PMLD Teaching Assistant

Reports To: Class Teacher and SEN Coordinator

Location: Nelson (BB9) 

Job Type: Flexible working hours 

Job Summary:

The PMLD Teaching Assistant supports the teaching and learning activities of a pupil with profound and multiple learning difficulties. This role involves working closely with the class teacher and other support staff to ensure the physical, emotional, and educational needs of the pupil are met, promoting an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Classroom Support:

    • Assist in the planning and delivery of tailored educational activities and lessons under the guidance of the class teacher.
    • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students, helping them engage in classroom activities and achieve learning objectives.
    • Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and adapt resources to meet the specific needs of each student.
  2. Personal Care:

    • Support with daily personal care routines, including feeding, toileting, and hygiene.
    • Assist in the use of specialized equipment and mobility aids, ensuring the safety and comfort of students.
  3. Behavioral Support:

    • Promote positive behavior and social interactions among students.
    • Implement behavior management strategies as outlined in individual behavior plans.
    • Monitor and record behavioral progress and challenges.
  4. Communication:

    • Use various communication methods, including sign language, picture exchange systems (PECS), and assistive technology to support students’ communication needs.
    • Facilitate effective communication between students, staff, and families.
  5. Health and Safety:

    • Maintain a safe and clean learning environment.
    • Follow health and safety policies and procedures, including those related to medical needs and emergency situations.
  6. Professional Development:

    • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities related to PMLD and special education.
    • Stay informed about current best practices and emerging trends in PMLD education.

Qualifications:

  • Essential:

    • Experience working with children or young adults with special educational needs
    • Basic knowledge of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
    • Moving and Handling Training
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting the educational and personal development of students with PMLD.
  • Desirable:

    • Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, or special needs support (e.g., CACHE Level 3, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent).
    • Training in specific communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS).
    • First aid certification.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
