Job description

Teaching Assistant (Full-Time)

Location: Basingstoke
Setting: 11–16 Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Provision – Pupil Referral Unit (PRU, Short Stay)

An established alternative education provision based in Basingstoke is seeking to appoint a dedicated and highly motivated full-time Teaching Assistant to join its supportive and experienced staff team. The setting provides specialist education for pupils aged 11–16 who require additional social, emotional and mental health support in order to engage successfully with learning. Operating as a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) and short stay provision, the school offers a structured, nurturing and well-regulated environment designed to promote both academic progress and personal development.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral colleagues and senior leaders to support pupils both within the classroom and in alternative learning spaces. The role will involve assisting in the delivery of personalised and differentiated learning programmes, supporting small group interventions, and providing one-to-one assistance where required. A key aspect of the position is helping pupils to regulate behaviour, develop resilience, and build positive relationships, while maintaining clear boundaries and consistent expectations.

You will be expected to contribute to the creation of a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment. This includes supporting the implementation of behaviour support strategies, reinforcing routines, and encouraging engagement in lessons and enrichment activities. The ability to remain patient, adaptable and composed in challenging situations is essential.

Previous experience working with children or young people is highly desirable, particularly within SEMH, PRU, alternative provision, or specialist educational settings. However, applications are also welcomed from individuals with relevant transferable skills and a strong commitment to supporting vulnerable learners. The ideal candidate will demonstrate resilience, empathy, professionalism, and a genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to education.

This is a full-time position, offered on a competitive rate of pay commensurate with experience and qualifications.

All applicants must hold a Child Workforce DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or be willing to obtain one prior to appointment. The provision is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and all appointments will be subject to satisfactory safeguarding checks.

To apply, please submit your most up-to-date CV. Early applications are encouraged, as interviews may be arranged upon receipt of suitable candidates.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
