1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: Bishop Auckland, County Durham
Start Date: February 2026
Contract: Initially until Easter 2026, with the potential for a permanent position
A supportive primary school in Bishop Auckland is seeking an experienced and compassionate 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated support to a pupil with complex Special Educational Needs. There will also be a mixture of working as a general TA with small group intervention
This role is suited to someone with a strong understanding of SEN, particularly Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, and communication difficulties, who can offer consistent, structured, and nurturing support throughout the school day.
The Role
You will work closely with a named pupil on a one-to-one basis, supporting their academic learning, emotional regulation, and social development, while promoting independence and positive engagement with learning.
Key Responsibilities

Delivering individualised 1:1 support tailored to the pupil’s specific SEN needs

Supporting the implementation of EHCP targets, behaviour support plans, and individual learning plans

Using structured routines, visual supports, and sensory strategies to support engagement

Supporting emotional regulation and behaviour using positive behaviour and de-escalation strategies

Assisting with communication needs, including use of visual timetables, Makaton, PECS, or other AAC strategies where appropriate

Supporting access to the curriculum by differentiating tasks and resources

Encouraging social interaction, turn-taking, and peer relationships

Supporting the pupil during transitions, break times, and less structured periods

Working closely with the class teacher, SENCo, and external professionals (e.g. speech and language therapists, educational psychologists)

Monitoring progress and recording observations to support reviews and assessments

Supporting with personal care or sensory regulation, if required, following training and school policies
-
Maintaining a calm, safe, and inclusive learning environment at all times

Ensuring all safeguarding and child protection procedures are followed

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
