Exeter, Devon

Full-Time | Temporary to Permanent

Hours: Monday–Thursday: 8:30am – 4:30pm (30-minute unpaid break) | Friday: 8:30am – 1:30pm (paid until 4:30pm)

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a full-time SEND Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Exeter from September 2026. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in a supportive, therapeutic learning environment, with the opportunity to secure a permanent contract following a successful temporary placement.

The Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and specialist staff to support pupils with a range of additional needs, helping them access learning, develop confidence and achieve positive outcomes.

You'll provide one-to-one and small group support, encourage independence, promote positive behaviour and help create a safe, engaging classroom where every pupil can thrive.

About the School

This specialist school supports pupils aged 5–18 with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The school provides a nurturing, relationship-led environment where every child receives personalised support to help them overcome barriers to learning.

You will support pupils with:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • ADHD
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
  • Anxiety and emotional regulation needs
  • Moderate learning difficulties
  • Trauma and attachment-related needs

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups.
  • Assist teachers with delivering engaging and differentiated lessons.
  • Encourage positive behaviour using therapeutic and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Support pupils' emotional wellbeing, communication and social development.
  • Implement strategies outlined within EHCPs.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists and wider professionals.
  • Create a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment.

Requirements

To be successful, you will:

  • Have experience supporting children or young people (SEND experience is desirable but not essential).
  • Be patient, compassionate and resilient.
  • Be able to build positive relationships with pupils and colleagues.
  • Have excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Have a genuine passion for supporting pupils with additional needs.
