SEN/SEMH Teaching Assistant
Job description
Teaching Personnel Liverpool is currently recruiting experienced, proactive, and resilient Teaching Assistants to support pupils with complex Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties across a range of Primary, Secondary, and specialist schools in the Liverpool area.
These full-time roles will begin immediately after the Easter holidays and offer the opportunity to work within supportive school environments that prioritise inclusion, tailored learning, and the holistic development of pupils with additional needs.
The positions are well suited to individuals with experience in:
- SEMH support
- Autism (ASC)
- Moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)
- ADHD
- Trauma-informed practice
- Behavioural support and de-escalation
- Nurture-based approaches
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with varying levels of complex needs.
- Assist in delivering differentiated learning activities under the guidance of the class teacher and SENCO.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and positive engagement in learning.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment.
- Implement personalised strategies and interventions to support communication, sensory needs, and wellbeing.
- Work collaboratively with external professionals, pastoral teams, and school leadership.
- Record observations, track progress, and provide feedback to teaching staff.
- Promote independence, confidence, and social development for students who require additional care and guidance.
Essential Requirements
- Experience working with SEN and/or SEMH pupils in educational, care, or youth support settings.
- Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- A compassionate, patient, and resilient approach to supporting pupils with complex challenges.
- Full-time availability from the start of the summer term.
- An Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply through Teaching Personnel).
- Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with young people.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- Team Teach or other behaviour intervention training.
- Experience in specialist provisions (SEMH schools, SEND schools, PRUs, or alternative education).
- Knowledge of safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, or de-escalation techniques.
- Relevant qualifications in Education, Psychology, Youth Work, or Health & Social Care.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
