Teaching Assistant – SEMH Specialist School, Bury St Edmunds

Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Do you have experience working with students who may require additional emotional, behavioural and educational support? Are you a confident driver with a full UK driving licence?

We are working with specialist schools in the Bury St Edmunds area, supporting pupils with a range of SEMH needs. These schools provide a structured, nurturing and supportive environment where students are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience, independence and positive relationships.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting students who may face challenges with their emotional wellbeing, behaviour, relationships and engagement with education.

You will work closely with pupils to help them overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills they need to succeed both in and outside of the classroom.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils and acting as a consistent source of support.
  • Supporting students with emotional regulation, confidence and resilience.
  • Helping pupils manage behaviours and develop positive coping strategies.
  • Encouraging engagement with learning and supporting students to overcome barriers to education.
  • Supporting the development of social, communication and independent living skills.
  • Using positive and consistent behaviour management strategies.
  • Helping create a calm, structured and safe learning environment.
  • Supporting pupils during challenging situations while maintaining a patient and compassionate approach.
  • Working closely with teachers and wider staff teams to provide consistent support.
  • Encouraging positive peer relationships and helping students develop their sense of belonging.

Essential Requirements

A full UK driving licence is essential for this position.

Previous experience working in an SEMH school, PRU, alternative provision, residential setting, youth work, care or education environment would be highly beneficial.
