Job description

We are seeking a compassionate, resilient and committed SEMH Teaching Assistant to join our team and support children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about making a positive difference and helping pupils overcome barriers to learning through tailored, trauma-informed support.

Working closely with class teachers, SEN staff and external professionals, you will provide both 1:1 and small group support, helping pupils to manage emotions, develop positive behaviours and access learning in a safe and nurturing environment.

Location: Burnley
Salary: £14.25 - £15 per hour
Hours: Full-time 8.30am – 3.30pm
Contract: Temporary and long-term

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted support to pupils with SEMH, trauma backgrounds and additional needs
  • Support pupils both in and outside of the classroom, including 1:1 interventions
  • Promote emotional regulation, positive behaviour and social development
  • Help create a calm, inclusive and safe learning environment
  • Build trusting relationships that encourage engagement, confidence and self-esteem
  • Implement and support behaviour plans and individual education strategies
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams and external agencies
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback on pupils’ emotional and behavioural development

Essential:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEN or behavioural needs
  • A calm, patient and empathetic approach when supporting challenging behaviour
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to remain consistent, supportive and professional in challenging situations
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities

Desirable:

  • SEMH, trauma-informed or therapeutic training
  • Experience in a school, alternative provision or youth setting
  • Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and emotional regulation techniques
  • Relevant qualifications or training (e.g. Teaching Assistant qualification, childcare, social care or youth work)
