SEMH Behaviour Intervention Assistant

Greater Manchester | Specialist PRU Setting | Full-time (Starting September) | Teaching Personnel

Are you passionate about supporting young people to overcome barriers to education? Teaching Personnel is recruiting for a SEMH Behaviour Intervention Assistant to work within a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Greater Manchester area, supporting students aged 11–16 years with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, behavioural challenges, and additional learning difficulties.

This is a full-time role starting in September, ideal for individuals with a strong background in behaviour support, youth work, or SEN education who are looking to make a meaningful impact.


About the Setting

This specialist provision provides an alternative education for students who are unable to access mainstream school due to behavioural needs, SEMH difficulties, or past trauma. The environment is structured, supportive, and relationship-focused, with smaller class sizes and a strong emphasis on pastoral care, emotional regulation, and re-engagement with education.


The Role

As a Behaviour Intervention Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support students both in and out of the classroom, helping them develop positive behaviours, resilience, and engagement with learning.


✅ Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH and behavioural needs
  • Implement behaviour intervention strategies to promote positive conduct and engagement
  • Support pupils in managing emotions, triggers, and challenging behaviours
  • Assist in the delivery of structured learning activities and interventions
  • Build trusting relationships to encourage attendance, participation, and progress
  • Support the school’s pastoral and safeguarding approach
  • Monitor, record, and report on student behaviour and progress
  • Work collaboratively with staff to create a safe and inclusive learning environment

Requirements

To be considered for this Behaviour Intervention Assistant job, you will have:

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, or in a PRU/SEN setting
  • Strong understanding of behaviour management techniques
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • A genuine interest in supporting vulnerable young people
  • Relevant background in education, youth work, care, or psychology (desirable)
  • The ability to remain consistent, proactive, and solution-focused
