SEMH Primary Teaching Assistant
We are recruiting a dedicated and resilient SEMH Primary Teaching Assistant to join a supportive specialist primary setting in Stockport working with pupils aged 5–11. The school provides a calm, structured and nurturing environment where pupils are supported to feel safe, build positive relationships and re-engage with learning. Staff work as part of a strong and experienced team, including class teachers, SENCOs and pastoral staff, with clear routines and consistent approaches in place to support both pupils and staff.
Pupils within the setting may present with a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, attachment needs, trauma-related behaviours and challenges with behaviour and engagement in the classroom. Many pupils benefit from consistent adult support, predictable routines and positive behaviour strategies to help them develop confidence and independence.
Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Support pupils to access learning and stay engaged in lessons
- Assist with emotional regulation and behaviour support strategies
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
- Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes and unstructured periods
- Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to follow behaviour plans and support strategies
- Help maintain a calm, safe and structured learning environment
- Encourage independence, confidence and positive learning behaviours
Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people (school-based or transferable experience welcomed)
- A calm, patient and resilient approach
- Confidence supporting pupils with behaviour and emotional needs
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable pupils
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
- Right to work in the UK

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
