Job description
Teaching Personnel are working with a primary school in Penarth who are looking for an enthusiastic and adaptable Year 1 & 2 Teacher to join their team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a teacher who enjoys working with younger pupils and understands the importance of creating a strong foundation during the early stages of primary education.
You will be responsible for delivering engaging, age-appropriate learning while helping pupils develop their confidence, independence and enthusiasm for school.
The Role
Working across Year 1 and Year 2, you'll play an important role in supporting pupils as they progress from the Early Years into Key Stage 1.
The role will involve:
- Planning and delivering engaging lessons across the Curriculum for Wales
- Developing strong foundations in literacy and numeracy
- Supporting pupils with phonics, early reading and writing
- Developing children's confidence with number, calculation and problem-solving
- Creating practical and engaging learning activities suited to younger pupils
- Differentiating lessons to accommodate a range of abilities and learning needs
- Developing pupils' independence and confidence within the classroom
- Establishing clear routines and expectations
- Managing behaviour positively and consistently
- Monitoring pupil progress and adapting teaching accordingly
- Providing additional support or challenge where appropriate
- Working closely with Teaching Assistants and other support staff
- Contributing to a positive, inclusive and stimulating classroom environment
Early Reading & Phonics
A strong understanding of early reading and phonics will be particularly valuable in this role.
You will support pupils as they develop their phonological awareness, decoding skills and reading fluency, while helping them develop a genuine enjoyment of books and reading.
You should be confident in adapting activities for pupils who may be progressing at different rates and providing additional repetition, modelling and support where required.
Developing Early Maths Skills
The role will also involve helping pupils develop secure foundations in mathematics.
This could include supporting pupils with:
- Number recognition and counting
- Place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Mental maths
- Problem-solving
- Mathematical vocabulary
- Practical and hands-on activities
- Developing confidence when explaining their mathematical thinking
The Ideal Teacher
The school is looking for someone who understands that teaching younger pupils requires energy, patience and creativity.
You'll need to be able to make learning engaging while also establishing clear routines and expectations that help children feel safe and confident.

- Adapt lessons to meet individual needs
- Encourage pupils to become increasingly independent

- Bring creativity and enthusiasm into the classroom
QTS and primary teaching experience are essential, with experience in Year 1 or Year 2 particularly advantageous.
The school would consider teachers with experience across the primary age range who are confident working with younger pupils and have a strong understanding of the transition into Key Stage 1.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
