Job description

Location: Basingstoke
Setting: 11–16 SEMH Provision (PRU – Short Stay)

An established alternative education provision in Basingstoke is seeking to appoint a passionate and resilient PE Teacher or Sports Coach to join its dedicated team. This provision operates as a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) and short-stay school, supporting pupils aged 11–16 who require a more personalised and specialist approach to education.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of young people who face social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges. The provision offers a structured, nurturing environment with small class sizes, enabling staff to build strong, meaningful relationships and positively influence pupils’ confidence, behaviour, and overall wellbeing.

The successful candidate will deliver engaging, high-quality PE sessions that promote physical health, teamwork, resilience, and self-regulation. Sport and physical activity play a key role within the curriculum, providing pupils with constructive outlets, opportunities to experience success, and pathways to re-engage with learning. You will be supported by an experienced pastoral and leadership team who are committed to collaborative working and staff development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver dynamic, inclusive PE lessons tailored to individual needs

  • Use sport as a tool to promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and personal development

  • Build consistent, professional relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and trust

  • Contribute to behaviour support strategies and pastoral development

  • Maintain a safe and structured learning environment

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or significant relevant coaching experience

  • A strong understanding of behaviour management and restorative approaches

  • Experience working within SEMH, PRU, alternative provision, or similar settings (desirable)

  • Patience, resilience, and a commitment to inclusive education

  • The ability to inspire and motivate young people who may have disengaged from mainstream schooling

Applications are welcomed from candidates seeking full-time or part-time work, with flexibility available to suit varying availability. Salary will be based on experience and qualifications, aligned with the teacher pay scale where applicable.

A Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service is required, or applicants must be willing to obtain one prior to appointment.
