Job description

PE Teacher / Sports Coach

Location: Basingstoke
Setting: 11–16 SEMH Provision (PRU – Short Stay School)

An alternative education provision in Basingstoke is seeking a passionate and resilient PE Teacher or Sports Coach to join its team, working with students aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This setting is a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) and short stay school, supporting young people who benefit from smaller classes, strong relationships, and a highly structured, trauma-informed approach. Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting students’ wellbeing, engagement, and personal development.

The Role

The successful applicant will:

  • Deliver engaging and structured PE sessions tailored to the needs of SEMH learners

  • Promote positive behaviour, teamwork, and emotional regulation through sport and physical activity

  • Build strong, consistent relationships with students

  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to support individual learning plans

The Ideal Candidate

  • A qualified teacher with QTS, or

  • An experienced sports coach with relevant experience working with young people

  • Experience (or strong interest) in working within SEMH, PRU, or alternative provision settings

  • Calm, patient, and adaptable, with a strong behaviour-management skillset

Additional Information

  • Applicants with varying availability (full-time or part-time) are encouraged to apply

  • Pay is based on experience, aligned with the teacher pay scale where applicable

  • A Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service is required (or willingness to obtain one)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
