Job description

LSA / HLTA – SEMH Alternative Provision (Bath)

Bath | Full-Time | Term Time

We are looking for an experienced Learning Support Assistant or HLTA to join a new Alternative Learning Provision (ALP) in Bath.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a newly established provision supporting a small number of pupils with SEMH needs. With low pupil numbers, the setting can offer a supportive and structured environment, giving staff the opportunity to build strong relationships with pupils and provide highly individualised support.

The role

You’ll work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to support pupils who may have found mainstream education challenging and require additional support with their social, emotional and mental health needs, behaviour and engagement with learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support
  • Helping pupils re-engage with learning and school routines
  • Supporting pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
  • Building consistent, positive and trusting relationships
  • Supporting emotional regulation and helping to de-escalate challenging situations
  • Encouraging pupils to develop their confidence, resilience and independence
  • Supporting learning both inside and outside the classroom
  • Taking on additional classroom responsibility where appropriate at HLTA level
  • Working closely with the wider staff team to provide a consistent approach for each pupil

Who are we looking for?

We are particularly interested in candidates who have:

  • Previous SEMH experience
  • Experience within an Alternative Learning Provision, PRU, specialist school or similar setting
  • Confidence supporting pupils who can present with challenging behaviour
  • A calm, resilient and consistent approach
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills
  • The ability to commit to the role full-time

A supportive transition

As this is a brand-new provision with low pupil numbers, there will be an opportunity for a thorough transition into the role and setting.

Potential candidates will also need to be available for a trial week at an established specialist provision, commencing 19 October 2026, ahead of joining the new Bath provision.

Why apply?

  • Opportunity to join a newly established specialist provision
  • Small pupil numbers and a more individualised approach
  • Full-time, term-time position
  • Ideal for an experienced LSA, HLTA, Behaviour Mentor or SEMH Support Worker
  • Opportunity to make a real impact from the early stages of a new provision

If you have experience supporting young people with SEMH needs and are looking for your next full-time role in a specialist setting, apply today to find out more.
