English Graduate Teaching Assistant – Secondary School – Tameside

Location: Tameside
Pay: £89 – £95 per day
Contract Type: Full-time, Monday to Friday, term-time only
Start Date: September 2025 (or earlier for the right candidate)

Are you a recent English graduate looking to take your first steps into education? Do you have a passion for literature, language and helping young people achieve their full potential?

Teaching Personnel is working in partnership with a thriving secondary school in Tameside, which is seeking an English graduate to support students across Key Stages 3 and 4. This role is ideal for aspiring English teachers who want to gain meaningful classroom experience and make a positive impact before enrolling in a teacher training programme such as PGCE, SCITT or Schools Direct.


About the role:

You will be joining the English department as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, supporting pupils aged 11–16 under the direction of teaching staff. Your duties will include:

  • Working one-to-one with students who require additional literacy support

  • Leading small group interventions focused on reading comprehension, essay structure, grammar and vocabulary

  • Assisting in planning and delivering tailored learning activities

  • Supporting pupils with special educational needs and English as an Additional Language (EAL)

  • Helping pupils prepare for their GCSE English Language and Literature exams

  • Promoting a love of reading and developing creative learning strategies

  • Assisting with classroom management and behaviour during English lessons


The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a degree in English Literature, English Language or a closely related subject (2:1 or above preferred)

  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Be confident in supporting young people from diverse backgrounds, including those with barriers to learning

  • Show enthusiasm for education and be motivated by pupil progress

  • Be open to further professional development and training

  • Have previous experience working with young people (voluntary or paid) – e.g. tutoring, mentoring, youth work, summer camps, etc.
