About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and dedicated Behaviour Support Assistant to join our team supporting children and young people with challenging behaviour in a school / Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) setting in Grays.
This role involves working closely with students who may have experienced barriers to learning, including social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping students regulate their behaviour, engage in learning, and develop positive relationships within a supportive educational environment.
You will work alongside teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals to provide targeted support and help create a safe, structured, and nurturing space for students to succeed.
Key Responsibilities
- Support students with challenging behaviour both inside and outside the classroom
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and personal development
- Assist in implementing behaviour management strategies and individual support plans
- Help maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
- Monitor and report on student progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, and pastoral teams
- Encourage positive social skills, emotional regulation, and resilience
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
✔ Experience working with children or young people with behavioural or emotional needs (school, PRU, youth work, care, or similar setting)
✔ Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
✔ Patience, empathy, and a calm approach in challenging situations
✔ The ability to build positive relationships with vulnerable young people
✔ Good communication and teamwork skills
✔ A genuine passion for helping young people succeed
Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience in a Pupil Referral Unit, SEN school, or alternative provision
- Training in behaviour support, trauma-informed practice, or Team Teach / de-escalation techniques
- Understanding of SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
