Teaching Assistant
Job description
We are recruiting on behalf of a Pupil Referral Unit serving the Rochdale community, providing an alternative curriculum for learners who require specialist support outside mainstream education. The provision supports pupils experiencing personal crisis, behavioural regulation challenges, medical barriers to attendance, or other circumstances preventing them from accessing a mainstream school environment.
This PRU offers a holistic education aimed at preparing pupils to return to mainstream schooling or move confidently into post‑16 pathways. The provision teaches essential life skills alongside academic subjects, with students assessed on entry and placed in the most appropriate centre for their needs.
The Role
We are seeking resilient, nurturing, and proactive Teaching Assistants to join this fast‑paced, high‑impact alternative provision.
You will support learners who require:
- Behavioural regulation
- Emotional resilience development
- Consistent adult guidance
- Adapted learning pathways
- Personalised SEND interventions
Your responsibilities will include:
- Building positive, trusting relationships with vulnerable pupils
- Supporting learning in small groups or on a 1:1 basis
- Encouraging engagement with the PRS’s alternative curriculum
- Assisting pupils in developing personal and social skills
- Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, safeguarding leads, and external agencies
Ideal Candidate Profile
We’d love to hear from you if you are:
- Experienced in PRU/alternative‑provision/SEND settings – or genuinely eager to learn
- Emotionally resilient with strong behaviour‑management skills
- Able to stay calm, consistent, and solutions‑focused under pressure
- Confident in supporting vulnerable or disengaged learners
- Passionate about helping pupils re-engage with education and develop essential life skills

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
