⭐ SEN Teaching Assistant – Secondary SEN Provision (Full Time, Wigan Area)

Teaching Personnel are seeking a committed, patient and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist secondary SEN provision in the Wigan area. The provision supports young people with a range of complex needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, sensory processing needs, speech and language difficulties, global developmental delay, learning disabilities, and pupils presenting with challenging behaviour linked to social, emotional or neurological needs. Many learners require highly personalised support to engage positively with their education.

This full-time position is ideal for someone who is passionate about helping young people with additional needs grow, develop confidence and achieve their potential.


Key Responsibilities

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small‑group support tailored to the individual needs of pupils.
  • Support learners with communication, emotional regulation and sensory needs.
  • Assist teaching staff in planning and delivering differentiated, engaging lessons suitable for a variety of SEN needs.
  • Use appropriate de-escalation and behaviour regulation strategies.
  • Encourage social development, independence and positive relationships.
  • Help maintain a structured, safe and nurturing classroom environment.
  • Support with personal care or mobility when required (training provided if needed).

✔️ Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEN (ASC, ADHD, SEMH, MLD/SLD, or similar).
  • A patient, calm, and empathetic approach.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships.
  • A proactive and adaptable attitude, with confidence in responding to challenges.
  • Understanding of SEN strategies (e.g., visual supports, sensory regulation tools, communication aids such as PECS or Makaton – desirable but not essential).
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply.
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable learners academically, socially and emotionally.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
