SEN Teaching Assistant
Job description
Teaching Personnel is seeking a dedicated, nurturing and proactive SEN Teaching Assistant to support a specialist educational setting in the Ludlow (SY8) area. This provision supports young people aged 7–18 with Autism (ASD), moderate to severe learning disabilities, communication differences, anxiety, ADHD, emotional needs and attachment‑based difficulties.
About the Setting
Set within the beautiful Shropshire countryside on the outskirts of Ludlow, this setting provides a highly nurturing, therapeutic environment designed to meet the needs of autistic young people and those with complex learning profiles. Pupils learn in adapted Victorian buildings with specialist spaces, sensory‑aware rooms and tranquil surroundings that support emotional wellbeing.
The ethos centres on celebrating individuality, promoting independence and helping every pupil develop confidence and self‑worth. Staff work to break negative cycles, create environments where pupils feel safe and understood, and deliver personalised pathways that enable each learner to fulfil their potential.
Practice is guided by the National Autistic Society SPELL approach—Structure, Positive expectations, Empathy, Low arousal environments and Links—which shapes communication systems, routines, behaviour support and the sensory environment. Therapeutic input (including OT and SaLT) is integral to daily practice.
About the Role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting young people to develop communication, self‑regulation, learning skills and independence. You will help create a calm, enabling environment where pupils can thrive, especially those who have previously struggled in mainstream settings.
You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes teachers, therapy staff and pastoral specialists, all working together to ensure each pupil receives consistent, compassionate and personalised support.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide tailored 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with ASD, communication needs, learning disabilities and emotional or sensory regulation needs.
- Follow and implement the SPELL framework through structured routines, visual communication and low‑arousal support strategies.
- Use sensory‑based activities, calming strategies and specialist tools to support engagement and self‑regulation.
- Adapt learning materials to suit each pupil’s processing style, communication profile and level of understanding.
- Encourage independence, social communication, self‑esteem and resilience through personalised learning pathways.
- Support pupils across specialist environments including sensory rooms, therapeutic spaces, outdoor learning areas and life‑skills‑based activities.
- Work collaboratively with staff, families and therapists to ensure holistic, joined‑up support.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Passionate about supporting autistic young people and those with complex needs
- Calm, patient and comfortable working in low‑arousal, therapeutic environments
- Empathetic and able to form positive, trusting relationships
- A reflective, proactive team player willing to learn specialist strategies
- Resilient, caring and committed to promoting the highest standards of support
Requirements
- Willing to complete a DBS check or provide a recent updated certificate
- Able to supply two references
- Proof of right to work in the UK
