Education minister Huw Lewis has provided more details on the Welsh government's categorisation system, which is aimed at raising performance levels in Welsh schools.
The new system will assess an institution’s performance and its capacity for improvement. A colour-coded scheme is to be used to do so, with green for top-performing schools, yellow for good schools, amber for schools that need improving and red for those most in need of improvement.
Some 14 performance measures are to be used, focusing particularly on maths, English and first language Welsh as well as the performance of those pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM).
An institution will only be able to achieve the highest 'green' category if a certain percentage of youngsters eligible for FSM are performing at the highest levels.
Mr Lewis said: "The performance measures provide a relentless focus on my three priorities of improving literacy, improving numeracy and reducing the link between poverty and educational attainment."
