Education secretary Nicky Morgan has presented the prestigious Lord Glenamara Memorial Prize to a pupil from the north-east who achieved 13 A*s at GCSE.
Year 12 pupil Declan Pang, who studies maths, chemistry, biology and music A levels at St Thomas More Roman Catholic Academy in North Shields, was selected as the winner by a panel of judges in recognition of his achievements in and out of school.
In addition to his academic success, Declan has raised money for local charities through voluntary organisation Vermont Big Band, mentored young swimmers at Tynemouth Amateur Swimming Club and visited local primary schools to encourage sports uptake.
The award was set up by former education secretary Lord Glenamara to recognise the achievements of young people with active interests in history, politics and public life in the North East.
"I will try my best to use this prize to develop a lifelong interest in furthering the educational opportunities of children and young people," Declan commented.
