Welsh education minister Huw Lewis has opened a new learning resource centre to raise pupils' attainment levels at a school in Merthyr.
The new facility at Pen-Y-Dre high school has been designed to raise enthusiasm for reading among its more vulnerable pupils and to drive up literacy skills throughout the whole school.
Along with a dedicated and comfortable space for studying and reading, pupils will have access to a wide range of new learning resources and books.
Mr Lewis said: "It is an excellent facility and I hope it will be widely used by current and future pupils at the school, and will help to ignite a real passion and enthusiasm for reading."
The resource centre is being provided through Schools Challenge Cymru, a £20 million programme aimed at improving performance at some of Wales' most challenged schools.
Some 40 institutions are participating in the initiative, each of which will benefit from an individually tailored package of advice, mentoring and financial support.
