Professor Graham Donaldson is to launch a comprehensive review of the National Curriculum in Wales, education minister Huw Lewis has announced.
The professor is to advance recommendations for a clear vision of education for Wales, running from foundation phase to key stage four. This will link directly to Wales' new qualifications system.
He will work closely with a range of stakeholders and consider the views of a number of independent task and finish groups, such as the ICT Steering Group's Report to the Welsh Government and the Arts in Education Review.
Education minister Huw Lewis commented: "This is a real opportunity to develop a rigorous and robust curriculum for our students here in Wales."
He added that he was delighted Professor Donaldson has accepted the task of conducting the review, as he has considerable experience and is committed to attaining the highest standards.
The professor's report, which will be published by the end of the year, will complement the Welsh Government's recent consultation on strengthening and supporting the teaching of literacy and numeracy in the curriculum in Wales.
