PE teachers play a vital role in developing the physical and mental attributes of athletes, according to Mo Farah's former college PE coach.
Alan Watkinson, who taught the British distance runner during his formative years at Feltham Community college, underlined the importance of providing guidance to young sports stars to ensure they achieve their true potential.
"Young people desperately need to be guided and coached by individuals who are looking out for their best interests rather than their own personal glory," he said.
Mr Watkinson, along with the childhood coaches of football star Wayne Rooney and sprinter Oscar Pistorius, have teamed up with BT to launch the BT Coaching for Life 'Coach of the Year 2012' competition.
The telecommunications giant is aiming to find the most inspirational coaches and PE teachers in local communities across Yorkshire and the Humber, with entries set to be judged by the BT Coaching for Life panel.
Olympic medallist Leon Taylor will visit the winning coach and help run a coaching session at their local sports club.
