Headteachers are being encouraged to boost their intake of black and ethnic minority (BME) candidates after figures revealed too few of them are entering the teaching profession.
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) is to urge every headteacher in England and Wales to ensure their teaching staff reflect the communities they serve, the Independent reports.
Delegates at the union's conference in Harrogate backed a motion describing the current state of recruitment as "disturbing", with many BME roles currently confined to administrative staff, cleaners, kitchen or security staff.
Department for Education figures show only 6.7 per cent of the teaching force are from ethnic minority groups, compared to 12.8 per cent of the population as a whole.
According to the NUT motion, the lack of BME role models in the teaching profession could impact negatively on pupils' attainment. In many schools, youngsters from ethnic minority groups make up 25 per cent of the total, with this figure rising to 60 per cent or even 90 per cent in London.
