The government has promised a new approach, which it says will help more people with learning disabilities into work.

Special needs teachers hoping their students will go on to find work may be pleased to hear efforts are being made to increase job opportunities.

A new cross-government Learning Disability Employment Strategy now sets out the government's aims.

"This strategy lays out an ambitious but achievable goal - to close the employment gap for people with learning disabilities," explained the care services minister Phil Hope.

Most important says the government is changing people's expectations about what they can achieve.

As well as laying out an extensive package of measures the government has promised 400 more positions within the Department for Work and Pensions.

The government's special education needs and disability division aims to help every child reach their full potential and "make a successful transition to adulthood and the world of further and higher education, training or work".
