Teaching Assistant

The challenging and varied role of a Behavioural Support Specialist is ideal for anyone hoping to make a positive impact on the lives of children and teenage students in a Secondary school.

As a Behavioural Support Specialist, you’ll offer practical help and emotional support to students who have difficulties expressing and communicating their emotions. You’ll typically be working in small groups and in one to one situations.

The focus of your role is to provide support to students, empowering them to address various challenges, reducing problems and risks and, in some cases, helping to make sure they are always striving to achieve.

You will need a fully enhanced DBS certificate on the DBS update service (can be applied for through Teaching Personnel) to be placed in the school.

Your role will vary depending on the needs of the student or students you’re helping, but you may also have a specialist area, depending on the schools focus for the student/ students.

Work experience

You’ll need relevant work experience with children and young people to work as a Behaviour Support Worker. This can be either in a paid or voluntary capacity. You may also be able to find experience in:

Experience in monitoring, advisory work, coaching, problem-solving and supporting children and adults is also helpful when applying for a post.
