Teaching Assistant – English as an Additional Language

Do you have experience as a translator or interpreter? Do you have previous experience working with secondary school children?

A successful secondary school in Tameside is looking for a Teaching Assistant to work with and support their students with EAL needs in the classroom. The position will be full time commencing after Easter and temporary for 1 term. The position could be extended into the new academic year.

As an EAL TA you’ll be responsible for providing translation and interpretation support for students who’s first language is not English, ensuring they receive the same instructions and level of understanding as the rest of the class. This will limit the amount of time EAL students spend out of class in sperate learning scenarios and will increase their inclusion and self esteem within the classroom.

As well as in class support, EAL TA’s will provide one-to-one and small group academic intervention and pastoral support alongside SEN coordinators and school senior leaders to develop key skills and English language skills. EAL Teaching assistants can also provide a valuable service to schools by being able to provide translation and interpretation between school leaders/ teachers and parents/ carers, updating them on progress and concerns.

Roles, responsibilities and highlights of this opportunity include:

  • Translation and interpretation support for EAL students in the classroom alongside regular teachers delivering lessons
  • Providing academic intervention and pastoral support meetings to promote inclusion
  • Developing EAL students key skills and English language skills by the use of workshops and out of class programmes
  • Translation and interpretation support between school leaders/ teachers and EAL students parents or carers to keep them updated on progress and any concerns
  • Full time position commencing after Easter for 1 term (could be extended into new academic year)
  • Weekly wages of up to GBP350/ a week
  • Dedicated support staff ready to welcome new TA’s

Ideal candidates will have experience in translation or interpretation in another capacity, experience working with secondary school children, experience as a classroom assistant and be able to translate Urdu/ Bengali/ Arabic to English competently. Candidates will also need to provide suitable employment based references and hold an in date Child Workforce DBS certificate on the update service (or be eligible to apply for one).

Applications are encouraged from candidates local to the Tameside areas of Ashton-Under-Lyne, Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Mossley, Denton and the surrounding areas of Stockport and North Derbyshire.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
