A Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Shipley is seeking a temporary Support Worker this September.

The school is situated in Shipley and is easily accessible by both car and public transport from the local areas.

The provision caters for children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs aged 11-16 who have been permanently excluded from mainstream secondary schools across the district.

The PRU have developed a high quality provision where young people can learn through supportive interaction, be supported through personalised interventions and experience success in their learning.

We are seeking an individual who can share the school's passion to create a stimulating and safe environment for young people, where the emphasis is placed upon growing, learning and fulfilling the potential that exists in every child. You will be committed to improving the life chances of every child by removing barriers to engagement and achievement.

As a Support Worker, your role will include:

  • Providing learning experiences that are high quality, stimulating, diverse and relevant so that pupils are motivated to engage positively
  • Recognising pupils as individuals, providing a personalised education which nurtures their social, emotional, spiritual and academic development
  • Ensuring that the personal development and well-being of all pupils and staff are promoted and safeguarded so that they make a positive contribution to the school and the wider community
  • Working in partnership with parents/carers, schools, external agencies, and the local community to enable all pupils to fulfil their potential in becoming aspirational life-long learners
  • Preparing pupils for successful reintegration into school, be that in mainstream or special settings
  • Developing pupils' personal integrity, self-esteem and social development

You will work closely with a key group of learners to support access the curriculum, which includes the delivery of personalised interventions which focus on pupils' literacy and numeracy needs. You will be part of a team that works to foster creativity and active learning - encouraging pupils to become motivated by their own personal and academic successes. You must have a commitment to maintaining nurturing, pupil-centred approaches which support and inspire young people to develop resilience and determination in overcoming challenges they face within and beyond school.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience supporting young people (or adults) with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs
  • Ability to relate to children/young people from diverse social backgrounds
  • Understanding and experience of delivering learning programmes/interventions
  • Ability to work with children exhibiting challenging behaviours
  • Completion of (or willingness to undertake) training in Team Teach (or equivalent RPI strategies)
  • Ability to create and develop personalised packages of support to improve attendance for students
  • Experience of working collaboratively with other professionals and agencies
  • Ability to communicate with parents/carers, key professionals, colleagues and pupils at all levels
  • Ability to assist the teacher in planning class activities
