Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant

A special school in Huddersfield are seeking a Teaching Assistant on a part-time basis from September 2020.

Our client is a generic Primary Special School, catering for 135 children aged 3-11. All students in attendance have identified SEN and an Education Health and Care Plan. Pupils may experience Moderate, Severe or Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. They may have a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Visual or Hearing Impairment and/or Social Communication Difficulties.

The school are seeking a Teaching Assistant who will be required for 3-4 days per week. It is anticipated that pupils will require a high level of support during the first half term as they transition into school following a significant period of time without accessing formal education in light of the coronavirus outbreak (please note that this could also affect the start date for the successful candidate).

The school use ongoing assessment in school using the P Levels (Pre-National Curriculum Levels) and National Curriculum expectations and guidance to determine what children can do and what they need to do next. For pupils who can access this meaningfully, the staff team focus on subject related skills development, tracking this for individual pupils. Practical skills development (e.g. eating, drinking, dressing etc) is also recorded termly to build up a view of personal progress for each child. This means that learning is broken down into very small steps so that progress is made at a pace which suits each individual child.

The successful applicant will:

• Provide opportunities for pupils to learn as individuals, breaking down any barriers to their learning and celebrating success at every opportunity
• Offer access to a broad, balanced, relevant, and differentiated curriculum - including Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Learning Areas, National Curriculum Subjects and multi-sensory experiences
• Support the delivery of activities to support children’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, engagement, and development
• Promote children’s interest, involvement, responses and engagement in school life and learning
• Provide specialist support around pupils with an Autism diagnosis, one-to-one sessions for children with visual impairments, and 1:1 or small group Music Communication sessions

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
