We are currently recruiting for an SEN Teaching Assistant in the Northamptonshire region. You will be working with Primary and Secondary aged children aged 16-18 on the Autistic Spectrum. The school provides appropriate specialised learning environments that minimise the effects of dual impairment and maximise the opportunities for learning and consider the impact of the environment on the learning of the HI/VI pupil. The school has a policy of total communication so that every child's individual communication skills are recognised as an integral part of their educational life.
At the point of referral, many pupils have additional, associated and sometimes complex needs, which may include: ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder); ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder); ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder); Tourettes; Mental Health Difficulties; Language and Learning difficulties; Asperger's or are on the Autistic Spectrum. The school does not cater for pupils who have a diagnosis of Autism as their primary need.
Some special schools are residential. If you work as a teaching assistant in this type of school, you may have to work a mixture of shifts covering seven days a week.
As a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant your main responsibilities will be:
- Supporting schoolwork under the supervision of the teacher
- Preparing learning resources
- Encouraging children's confidence, self esteem and independence
- Helping children understand instructions, through repetition, re-phrasing or demonstrating
- Putting into practice individual education, social, behavioural and personal care programmes
- Encouraging children to communicate with one another and with staff
- Providing feedback and assistance to teachers
- Supporting children in social activities and on outings
- Assisting children during therapy sessions
- Recognising signs of distress in children and offering reassurance
- Attending to pupils' physical needs
We are looking for individuals who aim to inspire every child to acquire the knowledge, life skills, emotional competencies and experience necessary, to fulfil their true potential and return to mainstream education with a transformed approach and attitude to learning. You will also ideally require a passion for education, leadership skills and the ability to work both as part of a team and individually.
To succeed in this role you will need:

YOUR LONG TERM PROSPECTS
- With experience you may be able to progress to a senior assistant job. You may be able to take on more responsibility by applying for training and assessment for Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status
- When you are fully experienced as a special needs teaching assistant, you may be able to study for a foundation degree. These are offered by a number of colleges and universities
- After completing a foundation degree you might be able to progress to a related honours degree which could provide a route for qualifying as a primary school teacher
