SEN Teaching Assistant

Teaching Personnel are working closely with a special school in Batley who are seeking a full time Teaching Assistant in September 2020.

The school is a Specialist ‘Physical and Sensory’ Complex Needs School. It is a mixed, day Foundation School for pupils from 3 to 19 years of age, with physical and / or sensory needs. Many pupils also have complex medical and learning needs.

The school has its own Sensory Department, with specialist Teachers of the Deaf, Visually Impaired and Multi-Sensory Impaired. The Sensory Department work very closely with the local Sensory Support Service in supporting children and young adults who have sensory impairment across the region.

The school follows a Total Communication approach. Whilst pupils may have one main mode of communication such as speech or sign, due to their additional needs, many pupils are taught through a combination of methods. Symbolic forms of communication such as Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) and Objects of Reference are also widely used throughout the school. All pupils follow a curriculum including aspects of the National Curriculum at a level personalised to meet their needs and are encouraged to develop an enquiring and active interest in their studies. Where possible, the curriculum is parallel to that of mainstream schools, with attention given to the additional and individual curriculum to develop personalised learning.

As a specialist Teaching Assistant, your duties will include:

• Providing assistance for specialist teaching staff to deliver learning activities
• Supporting pupils to achieve through specialist and bespoke learning pathways
• Supervising pupils during break and lunchtimes, including supporting with feeding where necessary
• Providing personal care for pupils, including the use of hoists
• Delivering programmes of intervention as directed by teachers or key professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Occupational Therapists
• Supporting pupils in and outside of the classroom, including support during hydrotherapy sessions, Rebound Therapy sessions and medical appointments

We are ideally seeking an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, with a working knowledge of supporting pupils with complex physical, sensory and/or medical needs. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
