Teaching Personnel are seeking a SEN specialist Teaching Assistant for a full time role in a special school in Bradford.
The school is legally registered to take pupils between 2 and 16 years old and provides specialist education for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) or moderate learning disabilities (MLD)/complex needs (including some complex speech and language disorders). A large number of pupils have additional disabilities such as a diagnosis of autistic spectrum condition (ASC), some have hearing and/or visual impairment, physical disabilities and challenging behaviour.
Class sizes vary but children are taught in small groups of 8 to 9 with a high level of support from teaching assistants. As well as classrooms, the school has a food technology room, library, hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, soft play room as well as extensive outdoor play areas.
As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, you will be required to work under the instruction and guidance of teaching / senior staff to undertake care and support programmes, to enable access to learning for pupils and to assist the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area, including within outdoor areas.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing support for pupils, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
- Assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education / Behaviour Plans and Personal Care programmes
- Establishing constructive relationships with pupils and interacting with them according to individual needs
- Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
- Encouraging pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
- Setting challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence
- Creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment in accordance with lesson plans and assist with the display of pupils' work
- Providing detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils' achievement, progress, problems etc.
- Undertaking structured and agreed learning activities / teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses
- Assisting with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtime
- Accompanying teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and taking responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher
