SEN Primary Teaching Assistant

A primary school located on the outskirts of Blackburn town centre are seeking an experienced Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant to work alongside and provide one-to-one support to a Key Stage 2 child with Autism from as soon as possible. The child has high academic ability, particularly in Mathematics, and is able to engage in learning within the classroom setting. The successful candidate's role will to be support the child in maintaining concentration on tasks and to motivate using rewards as necessary. The Class Teacher will take responsibility for planning activities for the child to access the curriculum in a way that suits them; however it will be your job to deliver this to the pupil and to support them in completing it. Being able to build a positive relationship with the child is of great importance. The school need a Support Assistant who will be patient and sensitive to the needs of the child, and will ensure that they feel safe and happy.

The primary school in which this new job opportunity is situated is a one-form entry, Blackburn primary school, graded 'GOOD' by Ofsted in 2017. The proportion of children with SEN and/ or with disabilities is above the national average, as is the number of disadvantaged children. The pupils are placed at the heart of the school; the team of dedicated staff and governors recognise that every child is unique and deserves the opportunity to be happy, feel valued and experience success. The school are looking for an educational professional who shares these values and who aims to promote these within their practice.

The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator will be the main point of contact for this role and will be there, along with the Class Teacher, to ensure that the successful candidate is fully aware of the individual needs of the child and any strategies that are known to be successful. Due to the time of year, the child's EHCP targets will have previously been set by the SENCo. It will be the role of the new supporting staff member to enable the child to make progress accordingly and, at the end of each half-term, make assessments against the targets in order to set new ones and move the child on.

  • Experience supporting children with Autism required
  • Experience providing one-to-one SEN support required
