SEMH Teaching Assistant – Secondary School (Bury Area)
Location: Bury, Greater Manchester
Salary: Competitive and based on experience
Contract: Full-time, Term-time only
Teaching Personnel is looking for a resilient and patient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist secondary school in the Bury area. This role is ideal for someone passionate about supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and helping them achieve their full potential. The children you will be supporting have additional needs such as challenging behaviour, trauma, depression, anxiety and long-term sickness.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs, ensuring they remain engaged and motivated.
- Implement effective behaviour management strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
- Assist teachers in planning and delivering tailored learning activities that meet individual needs.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage confidence and independence.
- Support pupils in managing challenging behaviour calmly and professionally.
- Monitor and record progress, reporting to the class teacher and SENCO.
- Work collaboratively with staff, parents, and external agencies to ensure consistent support.
Requirements:
- Previous experience working with SEMH pupils or in a challenging behaviour setting (school or care environment preferred).
- Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (essential).
- Two employment references covering the last 24 months (essential).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting learning and behaviour.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
