Emotional wellbeing and Mental Health is now the priority of Welsh government’s COVID CATCH-UP funding for schools. As a result, three of my partner schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Aberdare are looking for resilient support staff who can really make a difference to a vulnerable child.
- The position begins February 24th
- GBP60-GBP75 daily rate (Negotiable based on prior experience)
- Full time school hours Mon-Fri (8:30 start- 3pm finish)
- Probationary period through agency before transferring onto school contract (no finders fee)
- Learning and development opportunities through Teaching Personnel: Access to CPD courses and out Future Teachers Programme
- High-school environment in deprived areas of Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil
The role
Funding is being allocated from the Welsh Governments COVID CATCH-UP budget to provide specific emotional wellbeing support for the pupils who require help from people like yourself who can add some consistency and empathy towards them. Generally the pupils do not come from households where there is any academic support, and while basic numeracy, literacy and Life skills are useful for LSA work – this role demands someone who is actively looking to build rapport with a child and understand what triggers certain behaviours and how can they be managed.
- All pupils are identified as being at ‘High Risk’ of abuse
- Social Services are involved with most of the family’s concerned where the safeguarding officer in the school has expressed her concerns
- Their behaviour is often unpredictable. Accompanied by mild additional needs such as suspected autism and ADHD
- 2 of the pupils do very well in school but have a tendency to disrupt lessons and say things for ‘shock value’ because they are not stimulated in the classroom. Because of this they are moved into alternative classrooms which is a vicious cycle: Their social and emotional interactions do not develop and they
- The other two pupils are often held in inclusion and nurture zones where their reading and writing ability is the same as a child just beginning primary school. This causes them embarrassment and they deliberately exhibit bad behaviour to get sent out of the lesson. Twenty minutes later, they will be deflated and upset about their inability to cope with being wrong.
The schools are all situated in areas which are classed as ‘low income’. There are a high percentage of Free School Meals in the school and pupils who do not have access to computers or Wi-Fi at home. As with all schools, you have kids from all walks of life. The schools all work as a network and share best practice and support with staff development. None of the schools are in special measures and are making noticeable improvements with attitudes to learning and behaviour policies

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
