A secondary school in East Cardiff is looking for two teaching assistants to join their expanding ALN team in September. With one of the highest intakes of new pupils in Cardiff, the school is specifically looking for candidates who are comfortable and experienced working with primary aged children. Due to the low reading and writing ability of these new pupils, the school wants to assign 1:1 support with a mentor who will help them develop academically and socially in the school.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be someone able to differentiate between the needs of primary and secondary pupils, but be able to encourage them to make that vital transition into year 7. The children have self esteem and emotional needs which means they will need additional help with in nurture provisions with lessons.

The ideal candidate will be:

Firm but fair - able to support their pupil but not hinder their development into secondary school

Consistent - the pupils do not respond well to change so need their mentor to be supportive and implement rules and guidelines

Empathetic - The pupils do not always have the easiest of home lives so will need someone who has their best interests at the forefront of their mind and can create a positive learning environment for them

Responsible - You will be an integral part of their development, so will need to be present for reviews, development plans and potential meetings with social workers

A subject specialist - in the past music, art, drama graduates have worked well to help lead interventions in small groups. Maths and English graduates have also done very well.

The school has a 'GOOD' ESTYN rating and is a new build school with state of the art facilities. The sport pitches, ICT hubs and Special Needs Resource Bases are well equipped to help you support your pupil and keep them engaged. Like every school, the behaviour can sometimes cause disruption in mainstream classes which is why it is vital you can build a strong enough rapport with your pupil to keep them focused and engaged on their subjects.

What we can offer you:

  • Great rates of pay
  • CPD courses and development
  • Introductory trials into the school
  • A dedicated recruiter to assist you with every stage of your career
  • Permanent contract with the school subject to a satisfactory probationary period

The role

  • Full time - 8:25-3:10 Monday to Friday, with the opportunity to assist in after school clubs and lunchtime activities
  • 1:1 Emotional and behaviour support of pupils transitioning into secondary school with a low reading age
  • Working in a secondary school in East Cardiff in a state of the art ALN base
  • Ideal for someone experienced or confident working with pupils of primary age
  • Great experience if you are thinking of applying for a PGCE
  • Will contain some intervention work so a subject specialism is preferable
