Behaviour Support Assistant – SEMH Primary School (Bury Area)

Location: Bury, Greater Manchester
Salary: Competitive and based on experience
Contract: Full-time, Term-time only

Teaching Personnel is seeking a patient and resilient Behaviour Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH primary school in the Bury area. This is a rewarding role for someone passionate about supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and thrive in a positive environment. You will be supporting children with additional needs such as Challenging behaviour, Depression, anxiety, anxiety-based school avoidance, oppositional defiance disorder and trauma.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs, focusing on emotional regulation and engagement.
  • Implement effective behaviour management strategies to promote positive behaviour and reduce challenging incidents.
  • Assist teachers in delivering tailored learning activities that meet individual needs.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage confidence and independence.
  • Support pupils in managing challenging behaviour calmly and professionally.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress and behaviour, reporting to the class teacher and SENCO.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, parents, and external agencies to ensure consistent support.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with SEMH pupils or in a challenging behaviour setting (school or care environment preferred).
  • Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (essential).
  • Two employment references covering the last 24 months (essential).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting learning and behaviour.
