Teaching Personnel are currently recruiting for an SEN Teaching Assistant in the Northamptonshire region. The position is at a specialist SEN school that caters for young people include ASD, ADHD, Complex needs, obsessive compulsive disorder and attachment disorders. The school believes that all young people should be provided with appropriate education in a safe, stable, containing learning environment. Special needs teaching assistants are given opportunities to succeed through the use of highly personalised individual education plans to help support their students.
The school enroll students on a specialist curriculum which covers a range of subjects and activities, for example one day you may take the student swimming, the next day you may be on a specialist training course or helping students to develop reading skills. These activities are vital for students future proression and gives staff a varied working day where so day is identical.
To succeed in this role you will need the following...
- A minimum of 1 years experience of Autism and/or Learning Disability
- The ability to build strong relationships with students and adapt to a students needs
- Be very physically fit and able to run, jump and enjoy physical activity
- You will be a strong team player with great communication skills, have the ability to work under pressure, and above all be passionate and committed to the development of the young adults we work with
- To be available full-time
- Organisation and behaviour management skills
- Ability to tailor your approach
- Driven, motivated and positive personality
As a SEN teaching assistant you will be expected to do the following:
- Ensuring the pupils are able to use equipment and materials provided
- Motivating and encouraging the pupil as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to pupils' needs
- Assisting in speech and language, reading, spelling, numeracy, handwriting/presentation etc
- Using praise, commentary and assistance to encourage the pupil to concentrate and stay on task
- Liaising with class teacher, SENCO and other professionals about individual education plans (IEPs), contributing to the planning and delivery as appropriate
- Providing additional nurture to individuals when requested by the class teacher or SENCO
- Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies
- Helping to make appropriate resources to support the pupils
The school will provide access to specific training, like British Sign Language and Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) courses. They may also provide training on learning difficulties like dyslexia or autism. With experience, you may take a course to become a higher level teaching assistant (HLTA). With further study you could become a fully qualified SEN or mainstream teacher.
