Date posted : 19/10/17
£140 - £180 per day + negotiable, relocation scheme

Job description

This vacancy has now expired. Please see similar roles below...

The school is a thriving and excellent co-educational independent school outside of York, providing day and boarding education. An enthusiastic and well-qualified graduate is required to join this forward-thinking department who will motivate and stretch all pupils, whilst allowing every child to achieve to the best of their ability. Applicants will be required to teach Mathematics up to AS Level with confidence and dynamism.

The post is to cover for a maternity, on a full time basis, starting from November/ December.

The Department

The department comprises the Head of Department, a Second in Department and five other members, several of whom have additional responsibilities in management and pastoral roles. Where possible, Mathematics teaching takes place in the departmental suite which comprises four main classrooms and a fifth close by. The department has five interactive whiteboards with appropriate software.

School policy is for a normal maximum class size of 20 pupils, and pupils are set by ability in two parallel bands in the first and second year and in five sets by ability in the third, fourth and fifth years. Setting is also applied where possible in the sixth form. There is one formal set of school examinations in June, with other assessments through the year. Adjustments are made to the sets following a departmental meeting to consider results and other relevant factors.

At GCSE, pupils sit the Edexcel (4MA1) IGCSE examination. At AS and A2 level there are currently 70 pupils studying Mathematics, and 14 of these are studying Further Mathematics units. The specification being offered at A2 in 2017-18 is Edexcel (9371/2), and some degree of choice is offered to the pupils in choosing options from Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Mathematics to suit their strengths and interests. It is expected that the successful candidate would be able to offer Core/Pure Mathematics to AS level standard and it would be an advantage (although not essential) to offer either the mechanics or statistics content (or both) to Ml or Sl standard.
