Learning Support Assistant

A specialist provision within a 3-18 school in Rhondda Cynon Taf is looking for three teaching assistants to support their ‘Looked After Children’ in September. Although the roles would ideally be filled now, the current Corona virus pandemic and school closures means that the school is looking to start fresh in September so that there is not further inconsistency to these pupils.

The three pupils joining the school in September come with statements. One role is full time whereas the other two pupils have statements which provide three days support – so it is an ideal opportunity for those considering both part time and full-time opportunities. As these pupils are deemed as some of the most vulnerable children in the community, they have found it difficult to forge positive relationships with adults as much of their lives have been spent living between relatives and foster homes.

Although the pupils struggle with remaining focused in lessons, they do not struggle with any specific learning need, their challenges are rooted more within social interactions and self-reflection of their own behaviour. As their mentor, your role will be spent helping them understand the implications of their actions, but also will be spent building a rapport with this child to help implement learning strategies for them to go forward. In the past people from sporting backgrounds have proven highly successful, however the school is concerned mostly with consistency, and having a nurturing yet firm influence on these children.

As a teaching assistant for a LAC pupil, you have a huge opportunity to provide a young person with the support, consistency and encouragement they have been missing in their school life.
