Intervention Specialists for Special Educational Needs pupils required

Our partner school in Southsea, Portsmouth are looking to recruit a number of intervention specialists to aid support for SEN pupils and those requiring additional support across core subjects.

The school provide support for pupils according to their individual needs to ensure that all students, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) make good progress. Support takes place across the school and may be given individually or in small groups, in mainstream classes or within the schools own alternate provision. Support staff are sensitive to the emotional needs of their young people and ensure that pupils are not isolated or stigmatised when receiving additional help from the team.


The Specialist Teaching Assistants provide short term interventions that enable pupils to be successful independent learners in the classroom. Intervention is implemented by year leaders on a case by case basis and the team of support staff help to deliver the work with pupils to allow them to continue to achieve within school. Some pupils, who have more complex needs will require longer-term or more specialist support from the department, this will be tailored to their individual needs.

Intervention provided by the school includes:

  • Literacy and numeracy boosters
  • Social skills groups and individual emotional support
  • Equipment and resources, such as handwriting pens, laptops and coloured overlays
  • Exam concessions and access arrangements
  • An identified supportive area for pupils to access during breaks
  • Access to an additional provision to provide long term support
  • In class specialist TA's to aid the classroom teacher

The team currently consists of 12 Ta's and 6 specialist TA's including an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant, deputy SENCO, EAL specialist and a dyslexia teacher. You will join the supportive team lead by the schools SENCO and enjoy aiding a variety of pupils across different subject areas. The opportunity exists to specialise within you expertise area once you have secured and solidified your place within the department.

  • 1st Class/ 2:1 Graduates
  • relevant experience/subjects studied
  • Hardworking, committed and dedicated to the role
  • Open to learning new skills and building upon your existing experiences
  • Looking to further your career as a Specialist TA, Teacher, Pastoral Support or Educational Psychologist
  • Full time commitment, although part time will be considered for outstanding applicants
