The Design and Technology Department, along with the Art rooms and the Finlay Gallery are extremely well organised, resourced and very well equipped for all their needs. These impressive facilities allow students to manufacture products in a range of materials. There are four dedicated workshops, a well-resourced store room and a suite of 24 computers in the display gallery. This provides them with an excellent display area for the students work. Their CAD/CAM facilities are very well established and are lucky enough to have a range of CAM machines, including 3 Lasercams and 3D printing options.

All pupils in the First and Second form study Design and Technology as a core part of the curriculum. The subject is then optional from third form onwards. The Lower and Middle School course is linked to the requirements of the National Curriculum and pupils are involved in a range of activities that include product design and manufacture, electronics, structures, mechanisms, graphic illustration, ICT, computer control and CAD/ CAM. Class sizes vary from about ten to fourteen students depending on the year group.

They offer three Edexcel options for GCSE: Graphic Products, Resistant Materials and Electronics. These two year courses allow students to develop their design and manufacturing skills with fifty percent of the final marks awarded for a large design and make project of their choice. There is one examination worth 50% of the final marks.

They also offer an Edexcel A Level Product Design course although this maternity cover role will not require teaching to A level.

The Technology Club is very well established, popular and successful. The students work on a range of projects and they have won numerous competitions over the years and were the first School to appear in Robot Wars. Student numbers are high and we usually meet after School on a Wednesday.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach GCSE Resistant Materials including years 10 and 11.
  • Teach students from year 7 to year 9 all areas of the Design and Technology syllabus.
  • Deliver the schemes of work to the lower school (years 7 to 9) and help to develop and review its content.
  • Help to review and develop the lower school projects, worksheets and homework hand- outs.
  • Develop an extracurricular programme that encourages competitions and challenges.
  • Organise the student work for our dedicated gallery display area.
  • Marking, reporting and assessment of all students work on a continual basis.

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • Set challenging teaching and learning objectives based on knowledge of the pupils, their past/current achievement, the expected standards for pupils of the relevant ages, the range/content of work relevant to pupils.
  • Use these objectives to plan lessons and sequences of lessons in advance, showing how they will assess pupils' learning, differentiating between pupils' varying needs.
  • Select and prepare resources, including ICT, and plan for their safe and effective organisation.
  • Work with Department colleagues to develop Schemes of Work, teaching methodologies and resources.
  • Use out of school visits, field work, trips, co-curricular activities and invited speakers/groups to enhance pupils' learning.
