BSL Teaching Assistant - Stockport

A sensory support unit in Stockport require a BSL trained Teaching Assistant to support within a Secondary Hearing Impairment Unit. This unit supports 8 pupils with communication needs and varies between teaching pupils within the unit and alongside their peers within the specialist scool.

The sensory support unit caters for pupils with speech, language and communication needs as well as hearing impairments and BSL is a predominant method of communication. The Teaching Assistant would be required to support pupils with hearing impairments within their lessons and on a 1:1 basis, Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant is desirable but not essential. The role would require you to support within lessons to make them accessible for the pupil which may involve differentiation or simplification of the work set by the teacher. A lot of the role will also be working as an interpreter, any previous experience as a communication support worker would also be ideal.

This sensory support unit require a number of Teaching Assistants to support within their hearing impairment units around Primary and Secondary schools across Stockport and greater Manchester. Majority of the sites are located within specialist schools and some within mainstream. An awareness of special educational needs would also be of benefit.

This role is a long term supply role and will be likely to last until the end of the academic term with strong potential of continuing into January.

Teaching Assistant Specification;

• BSL Level 2 or higher
• Good communication skills
• Experience working as an interpreter is desirable but not essential
• Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant is desirable but not essential
• DBS on the update service
