Alliance of unions will benefit teachers

A new alliance of some of the largest teaching unions in the UK will help further strengthen the bodies responsible for representing the interests of teachers, those applying for teaching jobs will be pleased to hear.

Unions representing 375,000 teachers across the country will campaign together where possible and assist each other in the promotion of shared values.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT), the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), The Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) and the Ulster Teachers' Union (UTU) have all agreed to collaborate.

Christine Blower, General Secretary of the NUT, said: “I am pleased that our close ties with sister unions in the UK has been made stronger by this agreement.

"I am looking forward to working together on the many common challenges we face as unions committed to publicly funded and publicly accountable education provision.”

Many teachers are currently involved in a row over public sector pensions with a lobby of parliament in October and a day of action planned for November 30th organised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

General Secretaries from the newly united unions have said that though they exist in separate education systems across the UK and Ireland, teachers face similar challenges and they will be stronger working as a collective front.

Echoing Ms Blowers' comments, General Secretary of the INTO, Sheila Nunan, said that the agreement between the four unions will be of "great benefit to teachers" as it will allow them to better combat the challenges facing education professionals.

General Secretary of the EIS, Ronnie Smith, added that he felt that the partnership would "strengthen each union, whilst allowing for independence".

Similar sentiments were made by Avril Hall-Callaghan, General Secretary of UTU who agreed that working together would be another step towards teacher unity in the UK.

The NUT is the largest union for qualified teachers in the UK.
