Teaching assistant celebrated with national award

A delighted primary school teaching assistant in Chester has won a coveted national award.

Kerry Bowie, a TA at the Arches Primary School in Chester was awarded the 'Outstanding High Level Teaching Assistant of the Year 2010-2011' award for the north-west region.

Nominated by the University of Chester, where she qualified as an HLTA, Ms Bowie received the award in recognition of the positive impact she has had on improving the self-esteem and academic achievement of pupils, the Chester Chronicle reported.

Ms Bowie said "I can’t put into words how I felt when my name was announced. It was like a dream. I only do it for the children - which is my catchphrase."

Margaret White, senior lecturer at the University of Chester and HLTA preparation manager, recognised the potential Ms Bowie had to achieve success as a teaching assistant and nominated her for the award.

Held at Headingley Arena, Leeds, the awards ceremony was arranged by Carnegie Leaders in Learning, in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University and CCDU Ltd.
