Rise in number of students studying maths

There has been an increase in the number of A-level students taking exams in maths, it has been revealed.

Entries for mathematics rose by 7.4 per cent this year, compared to 2010.

Overall, demand for A-level maths has increased by 40.2 per cent over the last five years.

There has also been an increase in the number of students opting to take science subjects.

Entries for biology and chemistry rose by 7.2 per cent and 9.2 per cent respectively.

Physics entries increased by 6.1 per cent over the last year.

Commenting on the figures, Jim Sinclair, director of the Joint Council for Qualifications, said: "The increase in the number of students taking maths and the sciences suggest that young people are listening to the repeated calls from the industry for more people to study the stem subjects."

Overall, A-level pass rates increased slightly this year, rising for the 29th consecutive time.
