One in ten university leavers 'struggle to find jobs'

Almost ten per cent of graduates struggle to find jobs when they leave university, new research shows.

Figures published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency found that nine per cent of recent graduates are unemployed, representing an increase of three per cent compared to 2005.

It was revealed that unemployment is higher among male graduates than females.

"The graduate jobs market is showing encouraging signs of improvement, with an increase in employment for the first time since the beginning of the recession. However, new graduates still need to work hard to maximise their chances of success," said universities minister David Willetts.

The survey revealed that two-thirds of university leavers are in some form of employment, while seven per cent are combining work and study, and 16 per cent are studying only.

A recent study carried out by education foundation Edge revealed that 51 per cent of middle-income parents can no longer afford to send their children to university.
