NUT 'Teachers not burying heads in sand'

Teachers are not burying their heads in the sand over pensions, it has been claimed.

Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), said they have already shown that they are willing to compromise.

"We have already agreed to possible further changes, at a cost to ourselves, but we cannot negotiate an agreement when the government is failing to bring forward any evidence to support its case," she commented.

Ms Blower said the prime minister David Cameron is right to point out the majority of private sector workers do not have access to employer-sponsored pension schemes.

"The NUT wants to see fair pensions for all workers. We want the government to improve the basic pension and require all employers to contribute to decent occupational schemes," she commented.

"The prime minister seems to think equality means the whole country being reduced to poverty in old age."

Ms Blower added that the government should be aware that public sector workers are getting increasingly angry over its stance on pensions.

Thousands of teachers from the NUT and Association of Teachers and Lecturers went on strike today (July 30th).
