Actress Angelina Jolie said she chooses to educate her children at home with tutors because schools are not up to scratch.

Speaking to the Independent, the star said she wishes there was a book on how to navigate through the school system and learn how to tailor education for your children and their interests.

"I do think we live in a different age and the education system hasn't caught up with our children and our way of life," she told the newspaper.

"But we travel and I'm the first person to say, 'Get the schoolwork done as quickly as possible because let's go out and explore'. I'd rather them go to a museum and learn to play guitar and read and pick a book they love."

The Jolie-Pitt children were previously enrolled in the French Lycee school system.

When Jolie and partner Brad Pitt are not working they split their time between New Orleans and France.

Pitt revealed recently that his children follow an international programme.
