Websites 'cannot replace professional careers advice'

The launch of the new UCAS Connect site for potential students is a welcome development, but cannot act as a replacement for professional careers advice in schools, it has been claimed.

Johnny Rich, editor of Push.co.uk, said that although technology has a part to play in helping students to select universities, it is "not all good".

"It is good that people can share reflections and so on and that is to be welcomed, but we also need to bear in mind that social media can lead people to perpetuate myths and follow blind alleys," he commented.

Mr Rich argued that careers advice is something that needs to be given by people with expertise and experience.

He added that it would not be right for a student to get all of their advice from a chat room.

UCAS Connect gives potential students the opportunity to interact with other people applying for the same course and to pitch questions to experts.
